Hi Everyone!
Today for #SundaySupper we are to reflect on the past year or to talk about resolutions for the up coming year. Today, to reflect my past year, I made nuts. This past year has been crazy for me! It seems I have been a blogging machine and honestly I don’t know how I posted a recipe just about everyday in 2011, 2012, 2013. This year I am going to change that! I love you Guys and love cooking but it has been stressful coming up with a recipe everyday. That is why I am taking a day off starting in 2014. I won’t be posting recipes on Wednesdays. I want to spend 2014 in more of a peaceful atmosphere. I want to take care of me and my family. I know taking one day off doesn’t seem like much, but trust me it is!!
Today’s recipe for my Sweet and Savory Mixed Nuts are a wonderful combination of sweet with a pinch of savory. The nuts are crunchy with a hint of maple syrup and then you get a nice savory flavor from the smoked paprika, cumin, cinnamon and chili powder. The nuts almost have an Indian food taste to them. I couldn’t stop eating them.
I made these nuts just before Christmas so I could give them away as gifts and have a little bit of a healthy snack for me. I have eaten soooooooo many cookies this past month, that I am officially off cookies. I need to stay away. I hope I can? ha ha I’ll probably post a cookie recipe soon because that darn inner cookie monster calls me all of the time and eventually I’ll give in. But I will make them healthier because I have no control. I also had no control over these nuts that is why I made two batches, shame on me!
The nuts are super easy to make! I just cooked everything in a large skillet and than let them air dry in a baking pan. I like making flavored nuts this way, it’s so much easier and less of a mess then baking them. Plus the recipe only takes about 10 minutes to make which is great, especially when you don’t have time.
- ½ tsp. chili powder
- ½ tsp. ground cinnamon
- ½ tsp. ground cumin
- ½ tsp. smokey paprika
- 1 tsp. kosher salt
- 4 tbsp. unsalted butter
- ¼ cup maple syrup
- 1 cup blanched whole almonds
- 1 cup whole pecans
- 2 cups walnuts
- In a small bowl add chili powder, cinnamon, cumin, paprika and salt; set a side.
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper; set aside.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, melt butter and maple syrup. Once butter is melted add the nuts and seasonings and mix until all your nuts are covered. Stirring every 30 seconds or so, cook until nuts are fragrant about 6 minutes.
- Quickly spread out onto prepared baking sheet. Cool completely. Store in an airtight container.
Well this has been quite a nutty year for me and I really do think these nuts represent it! I had some sweet times and some savory times and I look so forward to see what is in store for me in 2014!
Be sure to check out what the other members of #SundaySupper have made to reflect their resolutions or reflections from this past year!
Have a fabulous day!
Toodles,
Jennifer
P.S. Here is a turkey vulture that I saw in my back yard this past week. My dog was freaking out and I thought it was because there was a cat int he yard, but nope, when I looked out the window I saw this massive bird sitting in a tree. This was the first time I have seen a turkey vulture so close. He let me take photos of him and when I was done he flew a way. He liked the idea of being on PB and P blog! lol

Wow, posting recipes every day for years would be quite a challenge and I could see how it would get rather nutty. Great way to tie in to this event (and tasty recipe too). I’m glad you are giving yourself a break in 2014. Happy New Year!
Jennifer @ Peanut Butter and Peppers says
Thanks Renee! Yup 2014 is going to be a good year! I need a little break and I am sure my readers will understand. Happy New Years!!!
Liz says
You ARE nuts!!! LOL. And I’m so glad you’re scaling back…I’ve been trying to do that, too. Your nuts look terrific…it’s exactly the kind of thing I love to give as a hostess gift, too. Wishing you a very Happy New Year!!! xo

I think my little dog would freak out too if he saw that bird. Cool that you got such a good look at it though. I’m a nature lover 🙂 Happy New Year!
Jennifer @ Peanut Butter and Peppers says
I love nature too, but the bird was a little much, you wouldn’t believe how big he really was. Happy new Years to you and your family!
Family Foodie says
I am exhausted just thinking about blogging a recipe every day for three years but I give you so much credit for your dedication. I am so glad you joined #SundaySupper in 2013. It has been such a pleasure getting to know you through your recipes and I look forward to many more #SundaySupper memories Around the Family Table in 2014.

Nuts for a nutty year = perfect! Bring us more wacky wildlife from your backyard, please. That turkey vulture is awesome!
Jennifer @ Peanut Butter and Peppers says
Lol, thank you Dorothy! I don’t usually get to much wild life in my yard unless it’s cats, squirrels, possums or raccoons. The bird is a new thing! I think it’s cool, but I hope he doesn’t stick around. He’s been here two days this week!
Shannon @VillageGirlBlog says
Nutty year = Nuts…waka waka lol Love it! I also love the spices that you added with your nuts. These sounds wonderful!

All the best to you in 2014 and glad you are taking a day off to rejuvenate…I can only imagine how crazy a daily posting schedule would be…love the nuts!
Jennifer @ Peanut Butter and Peppers says
Hi Majory! Posting everyday is pretty hard! I love the writing part and coming up with recipes, but it takes so much time figuring calories and taking pictures. 2014 is going to be a more take care of yourself type of year, well so I say now! 🙂
Courtney @ Neighborfood says
I could munch on these allll afternoon! I love spiced nuts. Also, that bird is terrifying!!
Jennifer @ Peanut Butter and Peppers says
lol, about the bird, he was pretty big and his wing span had to be like 4 feet if not more, you could actually hear them flap when he flew away.
The Wimpy Vegetarian says
What a great hostess or holiday gift!! I’m in awe of you blogging every day for three years. I don’t know how you did it!!! You’ve earned Wednesday off in my book, and more. And yes, those turkey vultures are HUGE. One stood near me once when I took a break on a rock while hiking the the Headlands, and I honestly wondered if I looked sick or weak to it. LOL.
Jennifer @ Peanut Butter and Peppers says
Oh my gosh, I would have freaked if one landed near me!! They are scary looking!!!
Renee - Kudos Kitchen says
First let me say that I can’t believe you’ve posted a new recipe every day for 3 years! THAT is amazing and I’m exhausted just thinking about it. Yes, I’d say you deserve to take Wednesdays off. LOL ~ I also think you deserve a medal!!!
Second, I’m a nut for nuts so I really love this recipe.
Third, that turkey vulture freaks me out and I can see why your dog was freaked too. I’d be worried that my dogs would be carried away (they’re little).
Fourth, Happy New Year!!!
Jennifer @ Peanut Butter and Peppers says
Hi Renee! I am grateful my dogs are big, I hope the vulture wouldn’t try for them, but I keep them in the house just in case. I know I can’t believe I blog everyday, it’s too much! I kind of have an anxiety when I don’t but I have to try to deal with that. 2014 is for trying new things. 🙂 Happy New Years to you and your family!
Martin D Redmond says
I totally get taking a day off from blogging. I had no idea how much time, it takes when I started my blog! Funny I was just telling my wife that I haven’t indulged in mixed nuts this holiday season. It’s the one time of year when I totally indulge my love of mixed nuts. I wish I had a few bags of your sweet and savory nut mix! I looks fabulous. Happy New Year!
Jennifer @ Peanut Butter and Peppers says
I know blogging is a lot of work and people don’t realize it until they do it, but it’s fun and I enjoy it so much!! I love indulging this time of year on nuts too!! I tend eat more of them in the winter then in the summer for some odd reason. Happy New Year to you and your family!!
Hezzi-D says
These sound so good! I love flavored nuts! These nuts sound perfect for a party appetizer.
Jennifer @ Peanut Butter and Peppers says
Thanks Hezzi! These would be perfect for a party appetizer and it’s so easy too!!

I made some sweet and savoury nuts last year and they were a big hit. For some reason I forgot about it this year. Yours look fantastic.
Jennifer @ Peanut Butter and Peppers says
Thanks Laura! I tend to forget about them too, until they started to explode out of my pantry. I figured I better do something with them. 🙂
