Sweet and Savory Mixed Nuts #SundaySupper

December 29, 2013 By Jennifer @ PB and P Design 56 Comments

Hi Everyone!

Today for #SundaySupper we are to reflect on the past year or to talk about resolutions for the up coming year.  Today, to reflect my past year, I made nuts.  This past year has been crazy for me!  It seems I have been a blogging machine and honestly I don’t know how I posted a recipe just about everyday in 2011, 2012, 2013.  This year I am going to change that!  I love you Guys and love cooking but it has been stressful coming up with a recipe everyday.  That is why I am taking a day off starting in 2014.  I won’t be posting recipes on Wednesdays.  I want to spend 2014 in more of a peaceful atmosphere.  I want to take care of me and my family.  I know taking one day off doesn’t seem like much, but trust me it is!!

Today’s recipe for my Sweet and Savory Mixed Nuts are a wonderful combination of sweet with a pinch of savory. The nuts are crunchy with a hint of maple syrup and then you get a nice savory flavor from the smoked paprika, cumin, cinnamon and chili powder. The nuts almost have an Indian food taste to them. I couldn’t stop eating them.
Sweet and Savory Mixed Nuts
I made these nuts just before Christmas so I could give them away as gifts and have a little bit of a healthy snack for me. I have eaten soooooooo many cookies this past month, that I am officially off cookies. I need to stay away. I hope I can? ha ha I’ll probably post a cookie recipe soon because that darn inner cookie monster calls me all of the time and eventually I’ll give in. But I will make them healthier because I have no control. I also had no control over these nuts that is why I made two batches, shame on me!
Sweet and Savory Mixed Nuts
The nuts are super easy to make! I just cooked everything in a large skillet and than let them air dry in a baking pan. I like making flavored nuts this way, it’s so much easier and less of a mess then baking them. Plus the recipe only takes about 10 minutes to make which is great, especially when you don’t have time.

Sweet and Savory Mixed Nuts 033a
Well this has been quite a nutty year for me and I really do think these nuts represent it! I had some sweet times and some savory times and I look so forward to see what is in store for me in 2014!

Be sure to check out what the other members of #SundaySupper have made to reflect their resolutions or reflections from this past year!

Have a fabulous day!

Toodles,

Jennifer
P.S. Here is a turkey vulture that I saw in my back yard this past week. My dog was freaking out and I thought it was because there was a cat int he yard, but nope, when I looked out the window I saw this massive bird sitting in a tree. This was the first time I have seen a turkey vulture so close. He let me take photos of him and when I was done he flew a way. He liked the idea of being on PB and P blog! lol

Wow, posting recipes every day for years would be quite a challenge and I could see how it would get rather nutty. Great way to tie in to this event (and tasty recipe too). I’m glad you are giving yourself a break in 2014. Happy New Year!

Second, I’m a nut for nuts so I really love this recipe.
Third, that turkey vulture freaks me out and I can see why your dog was freaked too. I’d be worried that my dogs would be carried away (they’re little).

It’s time for my annual pumpkin bath picture. I It’s time for my annual pumpkin bath picture. I don’t know what it is, but I love to give pumpkins a bath. Don’t they look cute bathing in the sunlight with bubbles around them? lol
🎃
There are two methods that I have used in the past; the chlorine bath and the dish soap bath. This is what I have learned.
🎃
My favorite and only way I wash pumpkins now is using dish soap. It gets rid of the sap and makes them clean. I soak my pumpkins for about 20 minutes. The pumpkins will last until December. Plus if you keep your pumpkins after the holidays it will decay and grow pumpkins the following year. Plus it’s safe for animals that may nibble on your pumpkin.
🎃
The chlorine bath method will make your pumpkins last possibly up to a year. They take very long to break down and I never got my pumpkins to seed themselves. Plus it is not safe for animals in my opinion. Though Clorox Bleach says it’s safe, they just taste salty.
🎃
The key to washing pumpkins is to make sure that you get the area around the stem dry. You don’t want water around the stem. This could make your pumpkin rot sooner. So after the bath, dry your pumpkins off very good.
🎃
Did you get your pumpkins yet?
.
PS if you are in the Bay Area, I highly recommend going to @threenunnsfarm to get your pumpkins. They have a wide variety and the pumpkins and are .75 a pound. I bought all these pumpkins for $42.

Downlite Bedding sent me the EnviroLoft® Down Alternative PrimaCool™ Cooling Comforter. Isn’t it beautiful? It’s so soft, cozy, hypoallergenic and it makes me so happy.

The comforter is 400 thread count, it has moisture wicking and cooling technology to help regulate body temperature, which is perfect since I get warm in the summer with all my hair and I like to be cool when I’m sleeping. A big plus is the comforter is white, I hide very well in it. It’s hard to see me. So mama can’t catch me on her bed.

Happy Thursday! Here is a view of my garden that I Happy Thursday! Here is a view of my garden that I took a couple weeks ago. My garden really overgrew this season. I need to do some major work in it, but with the heat, it’s just unbearable to be out there too long.
🌼
I had a lot of zinnias self-seed this season which is cool, but they kind of took over. They crowded out some plants, so I need to get in there and pull some out. Plus being so crowded, they got powdery mildew. Yuck!
🌼
I’m thinking for the Fall making this area a little harvest pumpkin area. We will see. I have grand ideas in my head, but I don’t always follow through. lol

Hello Monday! This weekend I made a little charcut Hello Monday! This weekend I made a little charcuterie setup for my husband and I. This is something that I just love to do. I could just eat this type of meal all day long.

I am sharing the “All White Collection” from @bzaar_wholesale. Each piece to the collection is so elegant and can be used all year round and would be gorgeous around the holidays.

The tray is made of marble with beautiful gold handles. The cheese knives are gold with solid marble handles and compliments the tray perfectly.

I used the marble flower shaped bowl for putting chocolates, but would be so stunning to use on your coffee table, side table and more.

The cake stand is has a marble base with Mother of Pearl edging and has a glass lid to go over the top. I will be putting my cakes and cookies on it in the future, but for now I used it to place my bruschetta.

@bzaar_wholesale has amazing products for your home, great pricing and global shipping. The link is in my bio.

Do you like making charcuterie boards? What do you add to yours?

Hello, hello! It may be 100 degrees outside, but I Hello, hello! It may be 100 degrees outside, but I can’t resist putting out some Fall. Especially when you get new decor from @12timbers. You would laugh if you came into my living-room. Half my room is Fall, the other half is still coastal blues. lol I’ll eventually change it all out.
🍂
Let’s talk the art work. Isn’t it stunning? My husband never says anything about my decor, but he keeps talking about how much he likes the framed art from 12 Timbers. I agree, it’s so beautiful. It reminds me of when I lived back east and we would go to Letchworth Park in NY. The colors are stunning and goes perfectly with the burnt orange color that I’m using this season.
🍂
I just adore the wooden cut out pumpkins from @12Timbers. When I look at them they make me smile. The orange wooden leaf is the perfect piece to bring everything together. This gets me so excited for Fall decorating. Now to finish the rest of the living room.
🍂
12 Timbers is so kind to give me a discount code. It’s good until Saturday at midnight. The code is PBANDP15.
🍂
Have the most beautiful day!

Look at this friends! It’s my first Fall vignett Look at this friends! It’s my first Fall vignette. Notice anything that seems a tad early? It’s my first pumpkin from my garden. Can you believe it? They started to grow early this season so it’s time to start picking. Unfortunately the massive one I showed you a couple weeks ago didn’t make it. It collapsed in the middle. That makes me sad, but at least I have more pumpkins growing.
🎃
I really had fun bringing out some Fall decor. Fall is not my favorite season, as I love Spring and Summer, but Fall is my favorite to decorate for.
🎃
I wanted to share with you my new reversible blocks from @krumpetshomedecor. Aren’t they cute. They would look so pretty on a shelf. The one side says Fall and the other side says Boo! The two wooden pumpkins are also from Krumpets Home Decor.
🎃
The Fall blocks are the Krumpets Home Decor deal of the week. Plus you get an additional 10% off with code: PBANDP. Link in my bio.
🎃
What is your favorite season to decorate for?

Hello Tuesday! One of my favorite summer drinks is Hello Tuesday! One of my favorite summer drinks is a nice cold glass of lemonade. I like it a tad sour over sweet. It gives you the zippys in your mouth. I do love a good homemade lemonade, but once in awhile I like to cheat and just get my favorite store brand and add some freshly cut lemons and a few sprigs of mint. It then looks homemade when it’s not.
🍋
This is my outdoor dining area. I put the tablecloth over the table and have kept it like that all summer. I love my table, but being black, it’s extremely hot when you touch it. Plus it has water spots from last year which is annoying. Not sure how to get rid of them?
🍋
What is your favorite summer drink? Have a wonderful day!
