Croque Monsieur #SundaySupper

August 25, 2013 By Jennifer @ PB and P Design 68 Comments

Hi Everyone!

Happy Sunday to you!  Today I am heading home from my weekend in Baton Rouge, I can’t wait to tell you all about my trip, but that shall come later this week!  🙂  Speaking of travels, last year I went to Paris France for a work trip, best work trip ever!  My friend Diane and I stayed in Paris for a few extra days to take in the sites.  I just fell in love with the city!  Unfortunately for being July it was cold, windy and rainy when we were there.  However, I did manage to take in a few sites, but one thing I do remember about Paris is the food!   My eyes lite up, my stomach grumbled and all I could think about was lattes, bread and pastries.  Ohhhh, the beautiful food in Paris!  I ate so many wonderful treats like croissants, macaroons, cheese and my first time ever having Nutella.  I was in heaven!  I swear Parisian food was made for me!  Paris has everything I love, bread, oatmeal, bread, yogurt, bread, pastries and so on….  You get the point, I love my bread.  But the one thing I regret not trying were the little sandwiches that I saw everywhere.  These little sandwiches were so adorable, they were made on a baguette and contained different fillings from ham, chicken, turkey and veggies,  Why didn’t I get one?  I guess it’s a great excuse to go back to Paris???  Anyway,  our assignment for this weeks #SundaySupper was to make Global Street Food.   I originally thought pizza from Italy or Beef Gyros from Greece, but then I thought about those sandwiches in Paris, so I had to create the sandwich that I never tried.  Let me introduce to you Croque Monsieur.  Sounds pretty doesn’t it?

Croque Monsieur

Croque Monsieur is a french sandwich that consists of hot ham and Gruyere cheese that is fried in butter.  There are different variations of the sandwich, but I took the basic idea of the sandwich and made it to where I know my Husband would eat it too!  When I told him I was making a sandwich that I saw in Paris that consists of ham and cheese on a baguette, he was all over it and said ok.  He couldn’t argue too much since we are sandwich lovers in our house, plus it consists of ham, one of his favorites.  However, when were at the store he had different ideas to what should go on his french sandwich.  Needless to say, we ended up with completely different sandwiches.  lol

Croque Monsieur

My Croque Monsieur is made with lean deli ham, Pepper  Jack Cheese instead of Gruyere and sliced apples.  I topped my sandwich with a mixture of fat-free mayonnaise and dijon mustard.  I don’t like the taste of fat-free mayo, but since I had it, I thought mixing mustard in it would mask the flavor of the mayo and you know what?  It did!  The mayo mixture tasted wonderful!!  I was quite surprised!!

Croque Monsieur

The sandwich is sweet from the apples and savory from the ham and mayo mixture.  This makes for a wonderful meal and it’s very filling!!  For calorie saving, I hollowed out the center of my baguette and used Sargento Ultra Thin Pepper Jack Cheese.  The sandwich is still a little high in calories, but if it’s a meal, then you are ok!  Plus the best part besides the taste is that I didn’t crave an evening snack!!!  Another bonus about this recipe besides the flavor is that it only takes a few minutes to make!  So if you’re in a rush this sandwich is perfect!  You could even slice it into mini sandwiches and serve at a party!

A sweet and savory Parisian sandwich served on a french baguette filled with ham, apples and a mayonnaise and mustard spread.
Serves: 1 6" sandwich
Ingredients
  • 1 6" french baguette (100 grams hollowed out)
  • 3 slices ham, reduced fat (42 grams)
  • ¼ cup apple, sliced thin (29 grams)
  • 2 slices Pepper Jack Cheese or Gruyere cheese (I used Sargento Ultra Thin)
  • 1 tbsp. mayonnaise, fat free
  • ½ tbsp. dijon mustard
Instructions
  1. Preheat broiler to low
  2. Add aluminium foil to a cookie sheet, set aside
  3. Cut baguette length down the center, to make two slices of bread. Hollow out the inside of the bread to make more room for filling. On the bottom half of the baguette, add ham, apple slices and then cheese. Place both slices of baguette in the broiler and cook until cheese is melted, about 1 minute. Watch so you don't burn the bread.
  4. Meanwhile; in a small bowl add mayonnaise and mustard, and mix until combined. Add to the inside of the top piece of baguette, place slice over the melted cheese slice. Serve and enjoy!

Croque Monsieur

I thought since my Husband loved the idea of a sandwich for dinner that was made with ham and cheese, that I would show you the sandwich he created.  It’s served on half an Italian Loaf of bread.  Yes, half a large loaf!  It’s loaded with ham, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and Italian Dressing.  He had fun making his own sandwich!  The sandwich is is as big as my head!!!

Wally Ham and Cheese Sandwich

I really enjoyed today’s #SundaySupper!  I love food that you can get on the street.  Sounds kind of weird doesn’t it.  lol  Give my finger food and I am one happy camper!!!  I look forward to seeing what the others have made!

Have a great rest of the weekend!

Peace out my friends!

Toodles,

Jennifer

Have you ever had a croque madam? It’s basically a croque monsieur with a fried egg on top, although I’ve also had it smothered in a white gravy. You definitely need to go back to Paris to eat these sandwiches. Let me know when so that I can join you! 😉

🌿
One thing I always love is there faux vase/pot flowers and plants. They are always so pretty and I want to buy them all. But there a couple of things that stops me. The biggest one is that I have no storage for them. Two, they seemed to have gone up in price. They seemed a little pricy to me.
🌿
For my arrangement, I used one of my canisters for the bathroom. I used floral foam to stick the stems in and I used the paper towel as a filler because I only had very little bit of moss. If I had more moss and I would probably not use the paper towel. This arrangement cost me $5.99.
🌿
Tip: If you look at Targets faux foliage stems only, they have a lot that are same of what use in there vases. The one I used was Hearth and Hand and was only $5.99 for a stem. The exact ones they used in there pots.
🌿
Hope you enjoy this as much as I have making it.

I took a can of Trader Joe’s cinnamon rolls and unraveled them, if that makes sense, and rolled them up like a palmier cookie. So fun! You could add food coloring to the frosting to make it pink and add sprinkles. Super cute! You can follow step by step recipe on Heidi’s Instagram page!
