This year Christmas was a little different. I normally make croissants from Trader Joe’s, have Mimosa’s, open presents and make a nice brunch. This year Jenny was in Buffalo and it wasn’t the same. Normally with a big brunch, we don’t have dinner because we are full from the brunch and we may just snack on leftovers. Since Jenny wasn’t around we changed up the tradition and we decided to make dinner instead. This year we made slow cooked ham in the Crockpot and scalloped potatoes. It turned out amazing. If you never had ham in the Crockpot you should give it a try. So moist and delicious.
We used a 6lbs, Pork Shoulder Picnic Ham and placed it in a 24qt. Crockpot with 1 cup of apple cider and slow cooked it for 7 hours. Simply amazing. The ham turned out moist, had a nice slight apple flavor and so easy. I love that you can just pop it in the Crockpot and walk away. I have to admit it’s one of the best ways to cook.
When I took the ham out of the Crockpot it was still in one piece. Honestly, I was afraid of it falling apart and being more like shredded pork, but it wasn’t. It cut so easy and you really didn’t need a knife to cut it when you served it. If you look at the picture above, it’s kind of funny looking. 🙂
- 6lbs. Pork Shoulder Picnic Ham
- 1 cup apple cider or apple juice
- Place Ham in a large Crcokpot, I used a 24qt. Crockpot and pour the apple cier over the ham. Cook on low for 6-7 hours or on high for 4-5 hours.
- Take ham out of Crockpot and slice and serve.
This makes for a wonderful Sunday dinner or a quick week night meal. Just add everything in the Crockpot before you go to work. The leftovers are wonderful with scrambled eggs, sandwiches and so much more.

My husband has always hated ham because it is so salty to him. My cousin in Iowa cooked hers differently than I had ever had, and we both loved it! She just used the stove/oven and cooked it slow with 1 can of crushed pineapple and something else that I can’t remember!! (probably the cider vinegar!) I do mine in the slow cooker, with the crushed pineapple and some chicken stock. I have a lot of liquid, about 1/2 way up the ham. Then I turn it half way through the cooking, to soak the other half. My ham is not as pretty, but the meat falls off the bone and is so good, and not salty at all! (by the way, I toss out all the liquid in the slow cooker after, as it is now hideously salty!)
