Graveyard Cupcakes #SundaySupper

October 16, 2016 By Jennifer @ PB and P Design 24 Comments

Hi Everyone,

I am Getting ready for Halloween.  I have a fabulous, easy cupcake recipe for you that will please kids and adults of all ages.  They are my ohhhh so scary Graveyard Cupcakes.  Okay, I don’t think they are scary, but kind of cute.  I’ll let you be the judge.  Check out these cuties.

Graveyard Cupcakes #SundaySupper

Aren’t they a adorable?  They are a scrumptious, chocolate, moist cupcake that is topped with a sweet buttercream frosting and decorated for Halloween.  The decorations are very easy to make too.  I love that about them.  Let me share with you the making of these Halloween gems.

Graveyard Cupcakes #SundaySupper

The first thing I do is gather all of my ingredients together.  It makes it so much easier when putting everything together.  Here are the ingredients for the cupcakes.  I used Dixie Crystals Sugar, a Southern favorite brand that has been around since 1917.  Plus, I used an egg, milk, melted butter for moisture and of course flour, salt and baking soda.  For a little bit of flavor, I used vanilla extract.  Love my vanilla extract.  Gives it such a nice flavor in chocolate.

Graveyard Cupcakes #SundaySupper

I used just a mixing bowl, and whisked everything together.  I did all I could to keep my fingers out of the bowl.  The chocolate is so rich and decadent and with Dixie Sugar it added a very nice sweetness to the cupcakes.  Here are the cupcakes before going into the oven.

Graveyard Cupcakes #SundaySupper

The cupcakes take about 15 minutes to make.  They smell amazing.  While the cupcakes were cooling I used the time to prep for the decorations.  By the time I was done the cupcakes were cool enough to frost.  For the decorations, I used a Chocolate Sandwich Cookies for the dirt.  I scraped out the frosting in the center of the cookie and pulsed the wafer portion of the cookie sandwich in my mini food processor to make it look like dirt.  I used oblong cookies for the tombstone.  I used a serrated knife to trim the bottoms of the cookie and with a black frosting pen I wrote RIP.  Pretty cool.  Then I used Gummy Sculls and Pumpkin Candies for extra decorations.  I love the look of the little pumpkins.

Graveyard Cupcakes #SundaySupper

The next step was to make the frosting.  I used 2 sticks of softened butter, 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract and 3 1/2 cups of Dixie Crystals Powdered Sugar.  For the green color, I used a few drops of green food coloring.  I used green to look like grass.  I beat everything together until was the consistency that I wanted.

Graveyard Cupcakes #SundaySupper

I got my assembly line all ready to go.  I frosted 3 cupcakes at a time and then added my decorations.  I found it easier doing it this way.  Decorating was easy.  I frosted the cupcakes with a thin layer of frosting.  I didn’t want to make it to high, since I was adding decorations to it.  I made a slight slit in the back of the cupcake to fit the tombstone, added a little bit of pulsed cookies for the dirt and then added my pumpkin or scull next to the tombstone and put in a Happy Halloween sign.  It was really fun to make.

Graveyard Cupcakes #SundaySupper

This would be a fantastic recipe to make with kids.  they would have a blast decorating the cupcakes.  You can find more fun ideas on Dixie Crystals Sugar website Kids in the Kitchen section.  They even have recipes on how to make homemade colored bath crayons.  I don’t think you need to have kids to make these?  I want to make them.  You should check it out!

Graveyard Cupcakes #SundaySupper

I have to say I am really proud of these cupcakes.  I am not a food decorator person.  I am not good at frosting or decorating.  I try and it comes out messy.  So with these cupcakes, I am proud to say I made them.  They are so pretty I don’t even want to eat them.

Rich, decadent chocolate cupcakes topped with a sweet vanilla buttercream frosting topped with simple to make Halloween decorations.
Author: Jennifer Drummond
Recipe type: Cupcakes
Cuisine: American
Serves: 12 cupcakes
Ingredients
  • Cupcakes:
  • 1 cup + 2 tbsp. all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ¼ tsp. baking soda
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • ¾ cups Dixie Crystals Pure Cane Sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup milk (I used non-fat)
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • 12 black cupcake liners
  • Frosting:
  • 2 sticks (1 cup) butter, room temperature
  • 3 ½ cups Dixie Crystals Powdered Sugar
  • 1 tbsp. vanilla extract
  • 3 - 5 drops green food coloring
  • Decorations:
  • 12 pumpkin candies or 12 Gummy Skulls
  • 9 chocolate sandwich cookies, with center frosting removed
  • 12 oblong cookies to make tombstone (I used Milano’s)
  • 1 black frosting pen to write RIP on cookie
  • 12 Halloween Signs (optional)
Instructions
  1. To make cupcakes:
  2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  3. Line a standard muffin pan with cupcake liners; set aside.
  4. In a bowl sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt; set aside.
  5. In a large bowl, whisk together the Dixie Crystals Pure Cane Sugar and egg until smooth. Add vanilla extract, milk and butter. Mix until well combined. Mix in flour mixture until no lumps remain.
  6. Evenly divide the cupcake batter into the prepared cupcake baking pan. Bake in oven for 15 - 18 minutes. Insert a toothpick to the center of the cupcake. If it comes out clean, it is done.
  7. Let cupcakes cool in pan for 10 minutes. Take out of pan and put on a cooling rack to cool completely.
  8. While cupcakes are cooling you can prepare the decorations.
  9. For the dirt: Take the frosting out of the center of the chocolate sandwich cookie. Discard the frosting (or eat it) and take the chocolate cookie wafers and pulse in a mini food processor or place in a baggie and with a rolling pin, roll over cookies until a fine powder.
  10. For the tombstone: With a serrated knife; cut off the bottoms of the oblong (Milano's) cookie to make a flat edge. I put the cookie next to the cupcake to see what size would look best. I cut off about a ½". With the black frosting pen, write RiP on the tombstone.
  11. To make frosting:
  12. In a large mixing bowl, beat together softened butter, Dixie Crystals Powered Sugar, and vanilla extract; until a creamy constancy; about 3 minutes. Add 4 - 5 drops of food coloring to get the green color you desire; make sure it is beat in well.
  13. To put together cupcakes:
  14. Frost the cupcakes with a butter knife. Add a small slit in the back of the cupcake and add the tombstone. Take ½ teaspoon of the dirt (pulsed chocolate cookie) and lay in the front of the tombstone. Add the pumpkin or gummy skull near the tombstone. Place Happy Halloween sign into cupcake.
Notes
I had plenty of leftover frosting and cookie crumbs (The dirt). Just make use for another purpose.

Happy Wednesday. I am sharing with you my little o Happy Wednesday. I am sharing with you my little outdoor space with our lounge chairs. Truthfully I wanted to get rid of the lounge chairs as they take up so much room and we never lay on the chaises. However, over the winter my husband made new cushions for the them and I didn’t have the heart to get rid of them. He made the cushions for our dog Samantha who passed away this winter. She loved laying on the lounge chairs. The boys don’t like to sit on them, unless you are on them too.
☀️
I do like the color combination of this space. It’s relaxing and I just love the Gerbera flowers. I wish I could keep the pillows on them, but my little Sully 🐶loves to tear apart pillows. So the pillows are living in my living room. I’ll bring them back outside if we have guests.
☀️
Have a wonderful day!

Hello, hello! Long time no see. Life has been busy Hello, hello! Long time no see. Life has been busy the past month or so, and I haven’t really had much to share with you, but this week I am on vacation so hopefully I can get some content to share.

I am sharing with you one last look of my blues in my living room, as I plan on adding some yellow. I’d like to say with the warmer weather it’s time for Summer decor, but it has been unseasonably cool here. We are still in the 70’s and windy. Great for the plants, but not me. I need some 80’s. This is just wacky weather!

My patio area is kind of an awkward space because we used to have a large pool that we took out a few years ago. We built our space around the pool. So we have lots of odd corners, but it works for us. I really like my backyard.

I went with light cool colors for my backyard space because of the heat and sun. I have always loved the coastal look. I do love to add a pop of color with flowers. Give me all the flowers!

I hope you check out everyone’s outdoor space. I love this time of year and I can always use more outdoor inspiration.

Happy Wednesday! My friend Kelly @farmtotablecreat Happy Wednesday! My friend Kelly @farmtotablecreations made a gorgeous DIY Tabletop Firepit and I had to run out and got all the pieces to make one of my own. Kelly’s is so gorgeous and fun. Perfect for evenings outside.
🩵
However, when I started to make mine I realized that my dogs are to interested in it, as you can see from the video. I was afraid they would try to get close to the fire and burn themselves. So I came up with another idea, where I could get the same effect without the fire.
🩵
A couple weeks ago my friend Claire @huntersridge_designs shared some solar candles that I thought were pretty, and would be great to use on my table. I’m a sucker for anything solar. 😂 So of course I ordered some. I decided to use the solar candles in my pot in place of the tiki fire. I think it turned out great. I just need to add a few more rocks to it, which I’ll get this weekend.
🩵
Be sure to check out Kelly @farmtotablecreations to see her firepit and also check out how Claire @huntersridge_designs styled her solar candles. Both of there accounts are inspiring.

Happy Wednesday! I have spent so much time working Happy Wednesday! I have spent so much time working outside that I have not worked on decorating my dining room for Mother’s Day or Spring. It’s a bare slate as of right now. So I thought I would share with you last years tablescape that I did for Mother’s Day.
💗
This Mother’s Day,(Saturday) little Jenny is taking me to the @gratoncasino to get a pedicure and possibly lounge at the pool, if it is warm enough outside. Then we will go for a nice lunch. I can’t wait. Sunday, I’ll spend Mother’s Day with the boys. 🐶🐶

Happy Monday! I’ve had a semi-productive weekend Happy Monday! I’ve had a semi-productive weekend in between the rain and cold. It was pretty chilly to me. I did get some plants planted and my husband added a new drip line in my big garden. Hopefully my flowers will thrive better this year.
🌷
On Friday, I watched 3 episodes of Firefly Lane on Netflix. If you like girl type series, I highly recommend. It’s so well written. It’s about best friends growing older together. Unfortunately this is the last of the series. I’ll miss it. I also read that Yellowstone will come back in November and that will be the end of the series. I’ll miss that show. At least I have Virgin River to look forward too. My husband likes Virgin River too.
🌷
Anyway, here is a view of my clean kitchen. I put together this little vignette for Mother’s Day inspiration. I love the Italian Soda from Trader Joe’s, but boy does it give me bad heartburn. I always just drink a little. Actually, anything sparkling, except regular soda, gives me heartburn. So strange.
🌷
Have a great week!

Happy Saturday! Wow I haven’t shared on a Saturd Happy Saturday! Wow I haven’t shared on a Saturday in forever. Today we are getting rain again. Last week it was 90 and sunny and now back to the 60’s, but we are going to hit 90 by next weekend. I can’t wait. I’m over this wacky weather we are having.
💙
I took down my Easter decor a few weeks ago and went back to using blues and greens in the living room. I think the colors look fresh and clean. Once the weather gets nicer, I’ll start to add in some yellows. I love yellow for the summer.
💙
Next weekend is Mother’s Day. Do you have any plans for the holiday?
💙
Have a wonderful weekend!

Happy Wednesday! I am so excited to share with you Happy Wednesday! I am so excited to share with you how I styled @myclaireburke pieces that I received. Let me tell you I love Claire Burke. I have been using there products for more than 25 years.
💗
In my 20’s, I used to go to Macy’s with my mom and in the bedding department they had a section of Claire Burke. I always bought there Original Scent potpourri. It smells like spring flowers with roses and lavender and it’s also beautiful to look at.
💗
If you are looking for a Mother’s Day gift, I highly recommend. I love the Original scent, if you like a floral scent. If you are more for fresh clean scent, the Sea Salt and Grapefruit is amazing. If you like fresh linen I recommend Wild Cotton. I promise they won’t disappoint. Oh and the Electric Fragrance Warmer is also Claire Burke. Works fabulous!
💗
My Claire Burke ships fast too! They were kind enough to give my followers a 20% discount code: PBANDP.

Happy Monday! This weekend I was finally able to g Happy Monday! This weekend I was finally able to get outside and work on my patio space, but unfortunately I don’t think I’ll be able to enjoy it this week. We are back to winter temps, high winds and rain. They are calling it “May Gray”. Such weird weather this year.
🌼
I was able to put out my new rug that you all helped me to pick out. I just love the blue. I decided to go with blues and yellows for my outdoor space. I think the yellow brightens up the space. I just need to get more flowers because after all you can never have too many flowers.
🌼
I wanted to also share with you my new side table from @vicllax_outdoor. I love the white color. It really helps to brighten this space. The table is made of metal, comes in 4 colors and is easy to put together. This table is perfect for a small space too. I couldn’t be happier.
🌼
Have you setup your patio space yet?

Happy Tuesday! This weekend we had amazing weather Happy Tuesday! This weekend we had amazing weather. Sunny, light breeze and in the 70’s. I did a lot of yard clean-up. I just need some dirt and my raised beds will be ready for planting.
🌼
I planned on working on the patio area, but time just went to fast. My husband repaired the trellis that fell over from the wind. We had the Morning Glory on it, but we got rid of it because it is highly toxic to dogs. I ordered a climbing rose from Heirloom Roses that will be delivered next week.
🌼
I’m sharing with you the Beverage Tub that I bought from Target that I am using as a planter. My husband drilled 1/4” holes 4” apart on the metal insert. I added a pot to the tub to give the flowers a lift. The handles on the tub are not bendable and I didn’t want to break the flowers and I wanted it to be easier to lift the flowers out, if I decide to change the flowers.
🌼
I love the look! Once I work on the patio area, I’ll move the table and flowers to the patio area. So excited to be working outside. Have a beautiful day!
