Lightened Up Philly Cheese Steak (Crock-Pot) / Giveaway

January 7, 2014 By Jennifer @ PB and P Design 117 Comments

Hi Everyone,

You know what the next big event is coming?  Nope not Valentine’s Day, but the Super Bowl!  I love the Super Bowl!  I am not talking about the game, but I am talking about the food!  I just love football food!  You know what I’m talking about, chicken wings, dip, nachos, pretzels, hot dogs, hamburgers and Cheese Steak!!  You know all the things that aren’t exactly healthy for you!  Well, to keep up with my holiday resolutions, I came up with a Lightened Up Philly Cheese Steak that will fill you up and keep your fingers for reaching for other treats that maybe near you!
Lightened Up Philly Cheese Steak (Crockpot)
This cheese steak tastes amazing! It’s full of  fork tender meat, peppers, onions and melted cheese. It’s just perfect!!!  This is one sandwich that I am proud of and I don’t feel a bit guilty eating it!  To cut down on the calories I used flank steak instead of strip loin, which is way less calories 1/2 an ounce of provolone cheese and the real calorie savor I hollowed out my hoagie rolls. Do you hollow out your rolls? All you do is take out the bread inside of the roll, leaving a bread core.  It makes a nice pocket, that way you can add more meat, peppers and onions. Doing this you will save anywhere from 50 to a 100 calories a sandwich. My goal was to get my sandwich under 400 calories and I did that! My Lightened Up Philly Cheese Steak is only 396 calories!! Woohoo!! Normal Cheese Steak is anywhere from 700 – 1200 calories. That’s crazy!!!  Plus my sandwich is not greasy!!
Lightened Up Philly Cheese Steak (Crockpot)
One big benefit of this recipe is that it is so easy and quick to make! I made it in my new Crock-Pot® Programmable Slow Cooker with iStir™ Stirring System.  Just add all of your ingredients (except the bread and cheese) into the  Crock-Pot® Slow Cooker,  and walk away!  Easy, peasy!!  You have to love the convenience and the ease of pressure to have dinner ready or missing any of the big game!

I do love these kind of sandwiches! As you know I am a sandwich fanatic!! The real proof of how the sandwich tasted was my Husband. He gave it two thumbs up! Double Woohoo!!

Flank steak slow cooked with onions and peppers, topped with provolone cheese served on a hoagie roll.
Serves: 8 sandwiches
Ingredients
  • 1½ lbs flank steak
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 2 large bell peppers, seeded, sliced into strips
  • 1 tbsp. black pepper
  • ½ tsp. garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • 8 hoagie rolls (I used Francisco International)
  • 4 oz slices provolone cheese
Instructions
  1. Season flank steak with black pepper and garlic.
  2. Spray a Crockpot with cooking spray; add onions, flank steak and top with sliced bell pepper. Add Worcestershire sauce and beef broth. Set Crockpot on low for 8 hours or 4 hours on high.
  3. Meanwhile, just before serving. Take your hoagie roll, cut it in half the long way and carefully core out some of the center. This will make your sandwich less calories and it will hold more filling.
  4. Take the flank steak out of the crockpot and thinly slice it, it will fall apart. Add 3 oz of flank steak to hoagie roll and top with onions and peppers. Add half an ounce of provolone cheese to sandwich and place on a baking sheet and broil until cheese melts. Be careful to make sure it doesn't burn. Do the same for the remaining sandwiches.

My favorite thing to make in a slow cooker is Swiss steak. I use a pound of thin round steak, pounded even thinner, cut it into 3 to 4 inch “squarish” pieces, which I then salt, pepper, and dredge in flour. I heat some oil in a skillet and brown the pieces on both sides; layer them in the slow cooker with sliced onion, celery, and crushed whole tomatoes with the juice (1 large can). Cook on low for several hours, or until the meat is fork tender. Serve over mashed potatoes. This is a family favorite and so easy!

I’m a sucker for pulled pork sandwiches made in the crock pot. I just had that for dinner last night. This may seem odd to some, but I put cole slaw on my pulled pork sandwiches. They’re a comfort food, the remind me of my childhood.

I have to say my favorite is probably the most simple one I make in the crock pot – boneless, skinless chicken breasts with a bottle of Italian dressing. So good over rice.

It’s a toss up – corned beef slow cooked all day and then popped in the oven to brown while roasting cabbage wedges. The cabbage has a uniquely different taste when roasted drizzled with basalmic dressing.
and of course the no fuss beef roast with a can of mushroom soup dumped on top sprinkled with a package of onion soup.

I’ve never used a crockpot before, because I’ve never had one. I’d like to try making chili in it, and my dad used to make awesome fillings for burritos.

Happy Tuesday! One thing you guys know about me is Happy Tuesday! One thing you guys know about me is that I love Target. It’s my happy place. I get so excited each season to see all the new things that come out.
🌿
One thing I always love is there faux vase/pot flowers and plants. They are always so pretty and I want to buy them all. But there a couple of things that stops me. The biggest one is that I have no storage for them. Two, they seemed to have gone up in price. They seemed a little pricy to me.
🌿
For my arrangement, I used one of my canisters for the bathroom. I used floral foam to stick the stems in and I used the paper towel as a filler because I only had very little bit of moss. If I had more moss and I would probably not use the paper towel. This arrangement cost me $5.99.
🌿
Tip: If you look at Targets faux foliage stems only, they have a lot that are same of what use in there vases. The one I used was Hearth and Hand and was only $5.99 for a stem. The exact ones they used in there pots.
🌿
Hope you enjoy this as much as I have making it.
Enjoy your day!

Happy Thursday! As you may know I did my deep clea Happy Thursday! As you may know I did my deep cleaning in my kitchen on Monday. I washed the floors, cabinets, counters and decluttered the countertops. It feels so good and everything is so bright and clean. Well….
💖
My husband decided to take vacation days this week, and my kitchen does not look so pretty. He has his 💩 everywhere. So annoying.
💖
Here’s a little bit of the styling that I did. I will work on the coffee bar this weekend, though I’m running a blank on how to style it. I need some inspiration.
💖
What do you do to get inspiration?

I’m sharing heart shaped cinnamon rolls that I made this weekend. I got the idea to make them from my friend Heidi @eleanorrosehome. She made the most delicious looking cinnamon rolls, that I couldn’t resist to make. So perfect for Valentines Day and sooooo easy!
❤️
I took a can of Trader Joe’s cinnamon rolls and unraveled them, if that makes sense, and rolled them up like a palmier cookie. So fun! You could add food coloring to the frosting to make it pink and add sprinkles. Super cute! You can follow step by step recipe on Heidi’s Instagram page!
❤️
Thank you Heidi for sharing the recipe. This was so fun!

I’m sharing with you my corner of my living room. I love how open this space looks. I added greenery to give it a fresh look. I also stuck with mostly natural colors with an exception of some blues to bring my whole living room together.
🌿
Tomorrow I am going to start to share Valentines Day. My dining room is filling up with hearts. It’s so fun. I can’t wait to start sharing. Hope you have a beautiful day!
