Funfetti Angel Food Cake

August 10, 2013 By Jennifer @ PB and P Design 26 Comments

Hello, hello!!

Remember yesterday when I said today is a special day?  Well today is my birthday.  I would tell you my age but it’s only a number, it’s really how you feel and act and I can tell you I certainly don’t act my age.  To celebrate today, I made myself a birthday cake.  I know it sounds kind of weird, baking yourself a birthday cake, but that’s how things roll in my house.  Besides I like baking, especially when it comes out perfect!!!  And this birthday cake is perfect in my eyes, after all it has sprinkles in it and how can anything be bad with sprinkles??

Funfetti Angel Foodcake
Yummy!  I love Angel Food Cake!  I have to say it is probably my favorite cake of all time!  Even as a kid I used to ask for either marble cake with chocolate frosting or angel food cake for my birthday.  There is something wonderful about the light, fluffy cake.  I swear if you allowed me to, I could so eat a whole cake in a day.  Now I have never done that, but I could, if I allowed myself too!
Funfetti Angel Foodcake
But what I love about today’s angel food cake is that it has sprinkles.  I thought I would try adding them in, right at the end of mixing the batter and to my surprise the sprinkles spread out beautifully throughout the cake.  It gives a little spunk to the cake and makes it all colorful and fun.  After all it’s birthday time and it’s all about having fun.  Hmmm, speaking of fun, I wonder what Hubby has planned for me today?  My guess is he will take me to Home Depot to buy me a stove.  Isn’t that romantic?  He is one of those guys that buys practical gifts and takes you with him to buy it.  Even for Christmas I got a refrigerator.  With Christmas in a few months, the last appliance we will need is a matching dishwasher.  I better buy that myself, I don’t want a dishwasher for Christmas unless it comes with someone who actually does the dishes!!!

Funfetti Angel Foodcake

The cake in general is pretty easy to make and only takes a few ingredients.  The two key things is whip the cake to make a nice stiff meringue and when you fold in the cake flour, don’t over mix it.  I know it’s hard, but don’t do it, the longer you mix it, a more dense of a cake you will get.  You want a nice fluffy light cake.  Your probably wondering why I didn’t add frosting to the cake, and to be honest, I am not a frosting person.  Typical angel food cakes have a powdered sugar glaze over the top, but I don’t care for that kind of frosting.  I like my angel food cakes plain.  That way I can add fruit and whip cream to it or just cut off a piece and eat it plain, which is what I have been doing with this cake.

A light, fluffy vanilla flavored sponge cake filled with colorful sprinkles.
Serves: 10 slices
Ingredients
  • 1 cup cake flour
  • 1 cup powdered sugar, divided
  • 1½ cups egg whites (about 10 eggs)
  • 1¼ tsp. cream of tartar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • ¼ tsp. kosher salt
  • ⅓ cup sprinkles / Jimmies
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and position oven rack just below center,
  2. Have one large two peice tube pan (angel food cake pan) ready
  3. In a bowl, sift cake flour and ½ cup powdered sugar; set aside.
  4. In a large bowl, beat egg whites until foamy, about 1 minute. Beat in cream of tartar, vanilla and salt, on medium-low speed until soft peaks form. Increase speed to medium. Gradually beat in remaining ½ cup of powdered sugar. Increase speed to medium-high, and beat until firm peaks hold when beaters are lifted; about 5 minutes.
  5. In batches, with a spatula, carefully fold in flour mixture over batter, do not over mix. Fold in sprinkles.
  6. Pour batter into prepared angel food cake pan and spread the batter to make the top even.
  7. Bake cake 30 to 32 minutes, or until puffed and lightly browned, and test the cake with wooden skewer by inserting it near center of the cake. If it comes out clean the cake is done. Insert narrow-neck bottle into center tube, and invert pan to cool cake upside down.
  8. When cake is completely cooled, remove from bottle and carefully cut around the sides of the pan to loosen the cake. Lift out pan’s center tube with cake. Cut under cake and around center tube to release cake.
  9. Top with a dollop of whip cream and sprinkles, if desired.

Ingredients:
1/2 cup non-fat milk, or your favorite kind
1 cup greek yogurt plain or vanilla
1 tsp. butter extract
2 tsp. vanilla extract (omit if using vanilla flavored yogurt)
2 pkt. stevia (to taste)
1 cup ice

Directions: Place all ingredients in a blender and process until combined and smooth.

Note: Start off with 1/2 teaspoon of the butter extract and work your way up from there. Depending on the yogurt you use, the extract can be very strong. Also, if you use vanilla yogurt, do not use the vanilla extract.

Wow, I made a lot of things with sprinkles.  How can you blame me?  For some reason these little jimmies are so much fun.

In case you may have not noticed, I included the recipe to my Birthday Cake Smoothie, since so many asked me to post it again.

Time for me to get going.  Have a great Saturday.  I’ll let you know how my big day went!  🙂

Toodles,

Jennifer

It’s time for my annual pumpkin bath picture. I It’s time for my annual pumpkin bath picture. I don’t know what it is, but I love to give pumpkins a bath. Don’t they look cute bathing in the sunlight with bubbles around them? lol
🎃
There are two methods that I have used in the past; the chlorine bath and the dish soap bath. This is what I have learned.
🎃
My favorite and only way I wash pumpkins now is using dish soap. It gets rid of the sap and makes them clean. I soak my pumpkins for about 20 minutes. The pumpkins will last until December. Plus if you keep your pumpkins after the holidays it will decay and grow pumpkins the following year. Plus it’s safe for animals that may nibble on your pumpkin.
🎃
The chlorine bath method will make your pumpkins last possibly up to a year. They take very long to break down and I never got my pumpkins to seed themselves. Plus it is not safe for animals in my opinion. Though Clorox Bleach says it’s safe, they just taste salty.
🎃
The key to washing pumpkins is to make sure that you get the area around the stem dry. You don’t want water around the stem. This could make your pumpkin rot sooner. So after the bath, dry your pumpkins off very good.
🎃
Did you get your pumpkins yet?
.
PS if you are in the Bay Area, I highly recommend going to @threenunnsfarm to get your pumpkins. They have a wide variety and the pumpkins and are .75 a pound. I bought all these pumpkins for $42.

Hello Tuesday! Hope you are doing well. It’s sta Hello Tuesday! Hope you are doing well. It’s starting to feel like Fall here in Northern California. The mornings and evenings are feeling crisp. I can’t get over that we are in the middle of September. Where did the Summer go?
🎃
I’m sharing with you the corner of my living room where I store my pumpkins that I grew before I can take them outside. It’s been too warm for them and I want them to last through October. They have been doing well, as they have been here since the middle of August.
🎃
I’m excited because this Saturday our local pumpkin patch will be opening. They have a huge variety of pumpkins and very inexpensive too. I’ll be stocking up. I just love this time of year.

I am sharing with you the last view of my kitchen before it is filled with Halloween. I spent 6 hours yesterday cleaning all the cabinets, appliances, sink and floor. I even did the windows. It sure tired me out. I’m not as young as I used to be. But it is so sparkly clean. I did put up my Halloween and I can’t wait to share with you. The dining room is the next room to conquer.

Hi, it’s me Samuel!! I am taking over mamas page Hi, it’s me Samuel!! I am taking over mamas page today because I got the best gift in the whole world and it even came in the mail on my birthday. How did @downlitebedding know? They are so good!
🐾
Downlite Bedding sent me the EnviroLoft® Down Alternative PrimaCool™ Cooling Comforter. Isn’t it beautiful? It’s so soft, cozy, hypoallergenic and it makes me so happy.
🐾
The comforter is 400 thread count, it has moisture wicking and cooling technology to help regulate body temperature, which is perfect since I get warm in the summer with all my hair and I like to be cool when I’m sleeping. A big plus is the comforter is white, I hide very well in it. It’s hard to see me. So mama can’t catch me on her bed.
🐾
The EnviroLoft® Down Alternative PrimaCool™ Cooling Comforter also has a Scotchguard stain release fabric and machine wash and dry. It’s truly an amazing comforter.
🐾
Mama let me do this takeover today because she knows that I love @downlitebedding as much as she does. She said she has never seen me get so excited as I do when we get Downlite Bedding and pillows in the mail. How can I not get excited? It’s like sleeping on a cloud!

Downlite Bedding was kind enough to give us a 20% discount: DYGEN20

Happy Thursday! Here is a view of my garden that I Happy Thursday! Here is a view of my garden that I took a couple weeks ago. My garden really overgrew this season. I need to do some major work in it, but with the heat, it’s just unbearable to be out there too long.
🌼
I had a lot of zinnias self-seed this season which is cool, but they kind of took over. They crowded out some plants, so I need to get in there and pull some out. Plus being so crowded, they got powdery mildew. Yuck!
🌼
I’m thinking for the Fall making this area a little harvest pumpkin area. We will see. I have grand ideas in my head, but I don’t always follow through. lol
🌼
How your garden growing? I lost all my potted plants from the heat. 😩

Hello Monday! This weekend I made a little charcut Hello Monday! This weekend I made a little charcuterie setup for my husband and I. This is something that I just love to do. I could just eat this type of meal all day long.

I am sharing the “All White Collection” from @bzaar_wholesale. Each piece to the collection is so elegant and can be used all year round and would be gorgeous around the holidays.

The tray is made of marble with beautiful gold handles. The cheese knives are gold with solid marble handles and compliments the tray perfectly.

I used the marble flower shaped bowl for putting chocolates, but would be so stunning to use on your coffee table, side table and more.

The cake stand is has a marble base with Mother of Pearl edging and has a glass lid to go over the top. I will be putting my cakes and cookies on it in the future, but for now I used it to place my bruschetta.

@bzaar_wholesale has amazing products for your home, great pricing and global shipping. The link is in my bio.

Do you like making charcuterie boards? What do you add to yours?

Hello, hello! It may be 100 degrees outside, but I Hello, hello! It may be 100 degrees outside, but I can’t resist putting out some Fall. Especially when you get new decor from @12timbers. You would laugh if you came into my living-room. Half my room is Fall, the other half is still coastal blues. lol I’ll eventually change it all out.
🍂
Let’s talk the art work. Isn’t it stunning? My husband never says anything about my decor, but he keeps talking about how much he likes the framed art from 12 Timbers. I agree, it’s so beautiful. It reminds me of when I lived back east and we would go to Letchworth Park in NY. The colors are stunning and goes perfectly with the burnt orange color that I’m using this season.
🍂
I just adore the wooden cut out pumpkins from @12Timbers. When I look at them they make me smile. The orange wooden leaf is the perfect piece to bring everything together. This gets me so excited for Fall decorating. Now to finish the rest of the living room.
🍂
12 Timbers is so kind to give me a discount code. It’s good until Saturday at midnight. The code is PBANDP15.

Hello Tuesday! One of my favorite summer drinks is Hello Tuesday! One of my favorite summer drinks is a nice cold glass of lemonade. I like it a tad sour over sweet. It gives you the zippys in your mouth. I do love a good homemade lemonade, but once in awhile I like to cheat and just get my favorite store brand and add some freshly cut lemons and a few sprigs of mint. It then looks homemade when it’s not.
🍋
This is my outdoor dining area. I put the tablecloth over the table and have kept it like that all summer. I love my table, but being black, it’s extremely hot when you touch it. Plus it has water spots from last year which is annoying. Not sure how to get rid of them?
