Baked Churros

May 2, 2013 By Jennifer @ PB and P Design 38 Comments

Howdy!

Ohhhhhh do I have a special treat for you!  One of my favorite fair foods of all times, Churros!!  But my Churros are not traditional Churros, they are baked and not fried, and let  me tell you, you wouldn’t notice the difference!

Baked Churros

These babies are simply perfect, loaded with cinnamon and sugar and the dough is soft, with a slight crunch on the outside.  They are the perfect Churro!  Not only are they totally delicious, but they are also so easy to make.  I was shocked on how easy they were!  I Googled the recipe and I found one on Latina’s magazine website.  I was a little afraid, but it seemed easy enough, so I thought I would give it a shot and by golly, it worked like a charm!!!

Baked Churros

All you do is melt some butter, salt and sugar with water, mix in some flour and egg and bam you have batter!  Churros on its way.  I filled my pastry bag, using a star shape tip (Wilton 1M size) and then I started piping out the dough.  The dough was all nice and warm as I placed on my cookie sheet.  Baked these bad boys for about 13 minutes and the smell ohh the smell of them baking is fantastic!

Baked Churros

Once I took my Churros out of the oven, I let them sit for about a minute so they weren’t to soft and then shook them in a baggie with cinnamon and sugar.  Then started munching.  For the sugar I used my NuNaturals Presweet Tagatose.  If you haven’t tried it, its fantastic substitute for sugar.  I love the stuff and I always keep it on hand.  In case you don’t know what Presweet Tagatose is, it’s a naturally-occurring sweetener found in milk, fruits and vegetables. It is 92% as sweet as sugar.  I love it!!!

A healthy baked cinnamon and sugar pastry found at the fair.
Serves: 28 Churros
Ingredients
  • 2 tbsp. brown sugar
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • ⅓ cup light or reduced-fat butter (I used Smart Balance Light with Flaxseed Oil)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup Egg substitute or 2 eggs
  • ½ tsp. vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup sugar or Presweet Tagatose
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon (or to taste)
Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F, Line two baking sheets with parchment paper and coat with cooking spray; set a side.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup water, brown sugar, salt, and butter and bring to a boil. Remove from heat and add flour, stirring with large wooden spoon until well blended.
  3. In a bowl, combine egg substitute and vanilla. Stir into flour mixture until completely incorporated. Spoon dough into pastry bag with large star tip (I used Wilton #1M). Squeeze dough onto baking sheet in 4-inch strips, leaving space for each churro to expand. Bake for 10 - 13 minutes or until lightly golden brown.
  4. In a large plastic or paper bag, combine sugar substitute and cinnamon. Add the hot churros, about 5 at a time and shake to cover. Serve warm.

Baked Churros

This was a fun recipe to make and glad I did it.  I do have to tell you, I normally freeze treats like this and I did freeze these and my Husband said they were mushy.  I know they are best as soon as you make them, but I took a chance to see how they would be defrosted at room temperature.  Not a good idea.  If you are like me and you like to freeze everything, don’t freeze the Churros!   Enjoy them the day you make them.  They do last all day!   🙂

Have  a great day!

Toodles,

Jennifer

Now since you can’t freeze them, can you make the dough in advance and bake when ready to serve? I like to prepare things in advance if I can… or do they reheat well?

First time making churros, awesome batter to use! I baked them at 350 accidently so they were soft all around and I like mine crispy on the outside. So I deep fried them for 30 seconds and they were so perfect! Thanks !

Happy Monday! I’m sharing with you a rare view o Happy Monday! I’m sharing with you a rare view of my kitchen. What’s so rare about it! It’s clean. 🤣
.
So this weekend our refrigerator broke. The freezer no longer works and the fridge is not getting cool enough. Ugh!! We bought our Whirlpool refrigerator about 4 years ago and spent near $3000 for it. It sure didn’t last long.
.
After reading reviews on a million refrigerators, they all seem like crap. I need your help! Do you have a refrigerator that you recommend?
.
I saw a Frigidaire one that we are debating on, but not sure? The reviews are good, but says, they were collected from a promotion. So I’m not sure how much I trust that? Anyway, any recommendations that you have would be great!

Have a great day!

Hi Everyone! I hope you had a great weekend. I mus Hi Everyone! I hope you had a great weekend. I must say I was disappointed in the Super Bowl. I really wanted the 49ers to win. Anyway, this weekend I refreshed my guest bathroom.
🐰
I have to say my new favorite item is the towel holder. It’s so cute and practical. I don’t have a hand towel rack and I hated leaving my towels on my counter. I saw the towel holder from Target and had to get it. It’s the Hearth and Hand brand.
🐰
I added some bunnies for Spring and a touch of pink for some color. The hand towels are from Homegoods. They have so many bunnies and Easter decor. I had to control myself because I was with my husband. I may go back.

Happy Monday!! I have to confess to you. I still h Happy Monday!! I have to confess to you. I still have Christmas in my kitchen.😳 I don’t know where to put it, so I haven’t taken it down. It’s not a lot, but just enough to where I can’t fit it. Ugh! Please tell me I’m not the only one.
💕
I did do one little spot for Valentines, which I think is so cute. I love decorating with Valentines candy. I can’t resist the pinks and the conversation hearts. I do not plan on going all out decorating this season, as time is going so fast, but I may add some hearts here and there.

Hi Everyone! With spring around the corner, now is Hi Everyone! With spring around the corner, now is the time to get your chores done, so when the warmer weather arrives you can enjoy it. My goal is to refresh my bedroom. I am slowly getting rid of stuff that I no longer need and slowly adding new decor. So hopefully in a few weeks it will be done. #twopageshome
♥️
The first thing I added are these stunning customized curtains that I was gifted from @twopagescurtains. Guys, I’m in love! The curtains are just so pretty! I am loving the way it shades the sun, but still lets the light in. Exactly the look I was going for.
♥️
The curtains I chose are the “Liz Linen Drape Soft”. They are a linen curtain that is environmentally friendly, hypoallergenic, long lasting, dust preventative, and breathable. They are also wrinkle free. I didn’t have to steam them. They came right out of the package ready to hang. They also come in 38 colors and 7 shadings to choose from. There is an option for everyone.
♥️
I’ll be honest I was intimidated on ordering custom curtains. I was so afraid I would order them wrong, but I didn’t. Two Pages has a measurement finder that asks you a few easy questions and boom you have your custom curtain size. It was so simple.
♥️
If you are looking for some new curtains or shades for your home, I highly recommend Two Page Curtains. I absolutely love them. They were kind enough to give my followers an 8% discount code: PBANDP. Link in bio

Are you planning on refreshing any spaces?

Happy Friday! Hope you had a wonderful holiday sea Happy Friday! Hope you had a wonderful holiday season. I am slowly working on taking my Christmas decor down. I still have my tree up, but I love the twinkling lights, and the real reason is I need my husband to get the box out of the garage. lol
💙
I am going with blues in the living room. I just find blue calming and peaceful. The first area I styled is the coffee table. Sorry about the views. I have a small, thin living room.
💙
I decided to go light on the decor and add some fresh faux greenery. I hate leaving the remote controls out, so I decided to store them in a decorative box. Everything here, but the white box was bought at Target.
