Kind Arthur Flour claims that they have the most Beautiful Burger Buns. They are told they are the best buns ever, but are they? After seeing countless e-mails from King Arthur with these buns staring at me, I finally gave in to see if their claims are true.
First off these are not exactly healthy buns, there basic and traditional sandwich/burger buns. I decided to make these since I have tried every recipe under the sun for regular burger buns and all pretty much failed. My Husband buys buns weekly for his sandwiches to take to work, and he always tells me my homemade buns are to dense, they are to heavy or are too sweet. So I thought I would surprise him, with what is claimed to be the best!
The recipe in general is really easy and is great for a beginner bread baker. I found no issues making these and thought it was a dream on how nicely it all came together, but still are they the best? Let’s get to work and find out. First thing I did was mix all the ingredients together in my stand mixer, and after about 3 minutes, the dough was soft and smooth. I shaped it into a ball, put it in a bowl and let it rise for about 1 1/2 hours until double in size. Here it is before I punched it down.
Once I punched the dough down, I shaped it into a loaf and cut it into 8 equal pieces which are about 100 grams a roll.
Then I shaped it into round dough balls and carefully pressed it down to flatten. Again this dough is a dream to work with. I didn’t even need extra flour to shape it. It’s very nice dough!
Then I covered with plastic wrap and let the dough rise for about another hour until double in size. One key-note, is you should spray your plastic wrap with spray, the plastic wrap stuck to the top of the dough, but it peeled off easily. Here are the rolls after the second rise, you can see where the plastic wrap stuck.
I brushed the butter on top of the dough and baked it in the oven for 15 minutes. The house smelled amazing!! Amazing!!!! I couldn’t wait to see how they turned out!!
Guess what, they were light, fluffy and had a slight sweetness to it. Are they the best burger buns? I have to say YES!! I have never made such an easy yeast bread recipe, that came out like a bakers dream. But the real test was my Husband. I decided to make him and his friend a salami and bacon sandwich, without telling them it was on homemade rolls. I wanted an honest opinion, so off to the garage I went with the sandwiches to feed two hungry men that were working on the car.
The results were “we liked the sandwiches, thanks for making them, they were really good.” I asked what about the rolls? My Husband said they were good. I said they were homemade. He said what? I thought you bought them from the store. Nope, homemade. He was shocked! I did sneak a bite of a roll, because I had to see and yes my friends, this is one recipe I’ll be making weekly! I highly recommend it, and don’t be afraid of yeast, this is one burger bun recipe that will not disappoint you!
- ¾ to 1 cup lukewarm water
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 large egg
- 3½ cups King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour
- ¼ cup sugar
- 1¼ tsp salt
- 1 tablespoon instant yeast
- 3 tbsp butter, melted
- Mix and knead all of the dough ingredients — by hand, stand mixer to make a soft, smooth dough.
- Cover the dough, and let it rise for 1 to 2 hours, or until it's nearly doubled in bulk.
- Gently deflate the dough, and divide it into 8 pieces (about 100 grams each). Shape each piece into a round ball; flatten to about 3" across. Place the buns on a lightly greased or parchment-lined baking sheet, cover, and let rise for about an hour, until noticeably puffy.
- Brush the buns with about half of the melted butter.
- Bake the buns in a preheated 375°F oven for 15 to 18 minutes, until golden. Remove them from the oven, and brush with the remaining melted butter. This will give the buns a satiny, buttery crust.
- Cool the buns on a rack.

Well I have to say King Arthur’s Claims are true! I guess I have to agree with the 323 people who gave it 5 stars! Now I need to let them know that I am giving their recipe 5 stars too!!
I wonder if this recipe will work the same with wheat flour? Hmmmm… Maybe next weekend?
