Lunch Break for Kids

Hi Everyone,

Today I bring something completely new to me which is making lunch for kids.  I don’t have any kids of my own except for my Husband, who is a big kid and he’s a handful too!!  So why am I making lunch for kids?  Because I believe that children should healthy eating habits!!  I was given the opportunity by Daily Buzz to contribute in Hidden Valley Ranch, Lunch Break for Kids program, and I gladly support it!

What is Lunch Break for Kids?  The Chef & Child Foundation (CCF) and the makers of Hidden Valley® Original Ranch® dressings & dips are partnering to host the Lunch Break for Kids fundraiser to showcase how simple, good food can make healthier bodies and stronger family connections, as well as support CCF’s national Childhood Nutrition Day in its mission to promote healthier eating to kids and their families through community-based initiatives.

What is Childhood Nutrition Day?  The Chef & Child Foundation nationwide celebrates Childhood Nutrition Day on October 16. This day is set aside for chefs to volunteer in their communities and raise awareness for the importance of childhood nutrition education and healthy eating by kids and their families.  I highly recommend checking out the Lunch Break for Kids site to see what you can do to help support healthy eating habits for children.  The program runs from October 15th – 19th.

For a child’s lunch I made peanut butter and pumpkin butter sandwiches, shaped as pumpkins with eyes made out of raisins.  I held the eyes on with a little dab of peanut butter.  I also included some candies almonds, reduced fat cheddar cheese squares, cut up carrots and broccoli and of course Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing!  After all children do not like to eat plain veggies. It’s fun to dip in ranch!  Trust me I know!  I gave this little lunch to my Husband as he was watching the football game and he looked at it with a big smile and said what is this?  I told him it was his lunch!  I was surprised but he ate it all.  Then about an hour later I said what do you want for dinner?  He said I’m not hungry I had my lunchbox lunch and it filled me.  I told him don’ expect me to make this for lunch for him everyday.  He laughed, yet looked kind of sad!

When I was child, which was a LONG time ago, I remember every once in a while my Mom would wake me up at 10:00pm on a Thursday night to watch Knots Landing with her.  She always had a bunch of veggies and Hidden Valley Ranch Dip.  I got to stay up for an hour with my Mom and eat veggies with Ranch!  Yum!!  I loved those times.  It was our special time together and I’ll never forget it!  Thanks Mom!

Not only do I support Lunch Break for Kids, but I also love Hidden Valley Ranch!  You may remember I have included it in such recipes as my Cornflake Breaded Chicken Fingers.

Buffalo Chicken Fingers

Grilled Cheesy Jalapeno Peppers

Ranch Dip

Ranch Burgers

Barbecue Chicken Salad with BBQ Ranch Dressing

I highly recommend checking out Lunch Break for Kids.  The top Chefs that are contributing to this special event have also posted some fabulous recipes for you to make.  Also if you click on the Location Tab, you can see if there are any special events in your area!

Toodles,

Jen
