Black Bean Brownies

September 7, 2012 By Jennifer @ PB and P Design 22 Comments

Hi Everyone and Happy Friday!!!

Do you have any plans for the weekend?  I’m pretty stoked that a Sprouts Farmers Market grocery store opened up about 25 miles from my home.  I went there the other day, just to check it out.  I loved the store.  The prices were pretty good and they had a lot of variety.  It’s kind of a mix between a Trader Joe’s and a Whole Foods.  They have some nice pricing for there grand opening, so Jenny and I will be heading there Saturday morning to do a little shopping.

I made brownies for my Husband to take to work this week instead of my normal chocolate chip cookies.  I asked my Husband what he thought of them and he said they were good, but he said that he needed coffee afterwards.  He said they were moist but made him thirsty.  I gave one to Little Jenny and she said there really good!  She said they were moist and chocolaty.  I asked her if they are blog worthy, and she said yes they are.  I asked would you eat them again?  She said yup!!  I think they went over well, because when I came home from work there was only 3 left.  I don’t think that’s two bad considering I ate only one of them.

I personally thought these brownies were pretty good!  Tasted like a moist brownie chocolate cake, if that makes sense.  The top of the brownies turned out kind of flat, so I sifted some powdered sugar on top.  The powdered sugar was a perfect touch it them and the next day the sugar soak into the brownies and even made them more sweeter.  I actually think they taste even better the next day.  There light, moist, chocolaty with little bits of chopped walnuts.  I would most definitely make these again.

To make these brownies it was pretty simple.  I threw all the ingredients in my blender, processed, pour into my pan and baked for 30 minutes.  It couldn’t be any easier.  If you don’t want to use a blender, a food processor would work great.  The stats for these brownies are pretty good!  The batch made 16 brownies, at 111 calories each, 5.8 grams of fat, 15 Crabs, 2 grams of fiber and 3 grams of protein.  I really don’t think that’s bad for a chocolaty treat!!!

I didn’t tell you that these brownies are gluten-free.  Yup, no flour!!  I’m trying to watch my flour/carb intake since I have been eating too much bread lately.  So your probably wondering, what is in these brownies.  Well I can tell you it’s something natural, something I love and it can be quite addicting, at least for me.  giggle giggle.  I know what your thinking!!  Your probably thinking what is this girl on?  Well I can tell you the secret ingredient is something I really, really love and I never dreamed of putting it in a brownie until I saw it online yet alone share it with my family.  When they find out, they may get upset with me.    What is that secret ingredient?  Well I can tell you it’s not sugar, eggs, cocoa powder, vanilla nuts or chocolate, but it is…  drum roll please….

Look really hard, you might just see it in the photo.  Do you see any specks of it?  Look harder….

The magic ingredient, boy when my family reads this the sh!t is going to hit the fan!!  I’m laughing right now!!  Ok, here it is, Black Beans.  Yes I used black beans.  I never in a bazillion years thought of it until I googled healthy brownie recipes.  Gosh, I hope Hubby doesn’t get upset.  Now he’s going to say he doesn’t like them because that is how he is.    But Jenny can’t say anything, she had a big smile on her face when she bit into the brownie.  ha ha She doesn’t even like black beans or any kind of bean.  I have to tell you, I was really skeptical of trying this, but my curiosity got to me.  I can honestly, honestly say, no one would have a clue!  No one!!  Even you won’t believe it, if you made it.  You have to try it and then surprise your family!!!  Do it, just don’t laugh when you give it to them.

Would I change anything to this recipe?  Well the original recipe asked for 1/2 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips, and all I had was a 1/4 cup mini chocolate chips, so next I would add that and add more walnuts too!!  I like brownies with walnuts!!  I found this recipe from Meal Makeovers, Mom’s Kitchen.   So would you make funky brownies like these?  I never thought I would, but I couldn’t help myself, I really wanted to try it and I am glad I did.  Now that I made this, you will probably see modifications to these brownies in the future.  I really loved these!!

So tell me, what is the most funky thing you ever put in your baking goods?

Have a wonderful weekend!!

Toodles,

Jennifer

I’ve seen black bean brownies popping everywhere and I have yet to make them! I love baking too. I’ll have to make that my goal for the weekend… New grocery stores are exciting, I could spend hours at a farmers market or a whole foods store! Still haven’t been to a Traders Joe though 🙁

These are good, though I wish I had read your entire post before making them. (bad me!) I only used the 1/4 cup of mini-morsels and agree that the original recipe would be better. They don’t compare to the decadence of regular brownies, but they’ve received no complaints from anyone here. I will certainly make them again.

Sprinkle with powdered sugar and cover with foil, they’ll taste better tomorrow!! I liked them better the next day!! I agree with adding 1/2 cup chocolate morsels. My step-daughter read the post today and she cracked up when she found out they were black beans. She couldn’t believe it! She said if she knew that ahead of time she wouldn’t of tried one, now she said she would eat them again. Going to check out the garbanzo bean cake!! That sounds interesting!

We’ll try what’s left tomorrow. I do know that sometimes sweets with these sneaky ingredients don’t taste quite right until they are completely cooled. These seemed room temp. They were quite good, just needed more and larger pieces of chocolate. 🙂 Do try the garbanzo bean cake – quite yummy, too!

Happy Thursday! I am a day ahead of myself this w Happy Thursday! I am a day ahead of myself this week. I thought yesterday was Thursday and I was excited because I thought today was Friday. I knew what day of the week it was, but my brain didn’t get it. Does that ever happen to you?

I’m sharing with you my new dog bone container that I got from @outshine_co. Oh my gosh Sampson loves it! Mom, move out of the way, I’m taking over!!
🐶
Hi all! This is Sammy here! I just have to tell you my Mom now has no excuse not to have bones in the house anymore. This beautiful container hold 5 boxes of my favorite Trader Joe’s bones. My Mom also needs to know that carrots, celery or a piece of lettuce doesn’t cut it! Bones is what I must have!
🐶
The container is made of a nice heavy coated carbon steel and holds 12lbs or 54 cups of dog food and bones. 🤩Yes thank you! That is what I’m taking about. The only thing is, the lid is so well fitted and airtight that I can’t get my paws in it. What’s up with that? Not fair! I need access to bones at all times.
🐶
My Mom loves the container too because it looks pretty on her counter and even comes with a sticker that she can write my name on. I absolutely love this container! Thank you Outshine Co. for sending this to me, I mean my Mom.
🐶
Thank your for letting me take over! I miss and love you guys! Love Sampson!

Happy Wednesday! Half way through the week. I’m Happy Wednesday! Half way through the week. I’m sharing with you, possibly my last look of my living room in it’s winter decor. I am so ready to add some color.
🪴
Depending on what is going on this weekend, I hoping to go to Homegoods for maybe a new blanket and some pillows. The only thing what color? I’m almost gravitating towards pink?
🪴
Though, yellow may look nice with the green plants. However, I do have so many pillows. Maybe I should look for pillow covers? Less storage. Pillows take up so much room. Oh the decisions.
🪴
I’ve seen some of you share pillow covers from Hobby Lobby. I’ve never seen them at my store, but I’ll do a search when I’m there? I guess that means I’m hitting up Hobby Lobby too. 😂
🪴
Instead of my daily question, I just want to wish and hope everyone is safe with this crazy weather.

Now that Valentines is over, it’s officially time for spring, at least in my mind. The weather may say otherwise, but I’ve been craving spring colors in my home. I went pretty neutral in my living room for winter, but I think I’m going to add some pastels. Now what color to add?
🐰
Last year if you followed me, I spent months trying to decide on what color to use. Ugh, I think I’m in the same boat again this year. I like yellows because it’s a happy color, but I also like pinks and blues. Oh the decisions.
🐰
I haven’t seem to much inspiration in the stores, though Target seems to have yellows and corals, plus a lot of neutrals. I’m seeing a lot of boho and woods. I do like woods with greenery.

What color doing you like to use in your home for Spring?

He was just laying around, didn’t get up to greet me, and the biggest sign was he didn’t ask for a bone. You know how he’s obsessed with bones.
🐶
Around 9am he perked up and asked for a bone and wanted to go outside to snoop around. He seems to be better, but is still kind of laying around. I just hope he will be okay. He’s 11, and I get so worried. He’s my child.

I’m sharing with you my pretty tulips from Trader Joe’s. They have such a great selection of tulips in array of colors. Though I didn’t see any roses, which is strange. We do not have any plans for the weekend, that I know of, but we have the tendency to wing it. I’ll keep you posted. Hope you have a wonderful Valentines weekend!

Hello Friday’s Eve! Today after work I’ll most Hello Friday’s Eve! Today after work I’ll most likely be heading to Trader Joe’s and I have to get my husband a Valentines gift. I would get him his favorite, chocolate, but he bought himself a ton of chocolate last weekend, so I’ll have to think of something else. Maybe he’ll like flowers from Trader Joe’s? Lol
🌸
Speaking of flowers, check out my new, gorgeous marble and wood cutting board that I got from my friend Brantley from @thesassyoak. I love the engraved flowers in it. It is so pretty.
🌸
The cutting board is her newest item at her Etsy shop. She engraves different items, like your name, but for me it is flowers. I’ll always keep the cutting board displayed. I think it is far to pretty to use. I’m afraid someone would scratch it.

I wasn’t going to, but I decided to do a small Valentines table setting. I couldn’t resist the small white plates with the little red heart in the middle that I got from @williamssonoma. It was the first thing I bought after my no home decor buying for 30 days.

I love the simplicity of the table. It’s a small space, so I do not like to go to overboard on the decor. I added a little gift of candy hearts to bring together the reds and of course to eat.

Hello everyone! Happy Tuesday! This weekend I clea Hello everyone! Happy Tuesday! This weekend I cleaned my kitchen sink area. It was filling up with daffodils and tulips and my husband said he feels like he’s in a greenhouse. I said they are bulbs, they won’t be there forever. Well they did poop out so I cleaned up my area to make more room for new plants.
🤣
You know when you take a photo and you realize something is in the wrong spot, so you fix it and take a photo again? Or maybe you see a crumb, a dog hair tumbleweed and you have to clean up and take a photo again. We’ll here’s my story.
😂
I took a photo of the kitchen sink area and I saw in the photo a smear mark on the dishwasher. So I cleaned the dishwasher. Then I took a photo again and I saw that smear mark again. So I scrubbed the dishwasher and ended up up cleaning all of my cabinets.
😂
I took the photo again and I saw that smear looking mark in my photo. What the heck? I examined the dishwasher and I’m thinking it’s so clean and smooth. I don’t get what that smear mark is. It was driving me crazy!!
🤣
Then it hit me. It was the reflection of the dog food dish in the dishwasher. Sigh.... All that scrubbing and I could have just moved the bowl. Well now I have a clean dishwasher and cabinets.
🤦‍♀️
Has this ever happened to you?

Hello Monday! We meet again!! And hello everyone! Hello Monday! We meet again!! And hello everyone! Hope you had a nice weekend. I took advantage of the sunshine and 64 degree weather we had. I did some therapeutic yard work and I planted Pansies, Stock and Ranunculus in the garden. It felt so nice to be outside and to see flowers.
🌸
This weekend I finally repotted my Coffee Plant and Dracaena plant. They had roots growing out of the pot. I have no idea how the Dracaena (plant on right) plant survived. The roots were so dry and it was in about a 3” container. I looked up the plant and it can grow to 10’. Not the care I gave mine. That little plant is about a year old.
🌸
If your looking for a low light, easy to care for plant that takes neglect, get a Dracaena. I’m proof that it can take neglect.
🌸
Basic repotting plant tips
1. Get a pot about 2-4” larger in diameter then the pot your current plant is in. Make sure it has a drainage hole at the bottom.
2. Use indoor potting soil, preferably organic.
3. Carefully take plant out of current pot, check if the roots are root bound, if so, try to untangle a little bit. Just be gentle.
4. Place plant in new pot with fresh indoor potting soil
5. Give a good watering
🌸
Did you watch the Super Bowl? I wasn’t a fan of the game, but I enjoyed some of the commercials. The Cheetos one with Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunas made me laugh. I didn’t care for the Doritos commercial with my man Matthew McConaughey.
🌸
Were there any commercials you liked?
