Hi Everyone,
Saturday my Husband took my car to work to make sure it was in tip top shape for me to drive to Lake Tahoe. I thought I would surprise my wonderful Husband with a surprise dinner that I know he will love. This dinner became the man versus woman meal!
I swear when my Husband saw his sandwich his heart skipped a beat. He walked in the door and I said your dinner is on the counter. His eyes lite up a like a kid on Christmas.
If he ever had any doubts that I don’t love him, I think that all changed when he saw this sandwich. It’s loaded with about 1 pound of thinly sliced sirloin, peppers, onions and a cup of shredded Pepper Jack Cheese. He said I don’t think I could eat all that. What? This is the man who can eat 6 hot dogs in one sitting. I will admit I knew he wouldn’t be able to eat the whole thing, but he did eat half and he carefully wrapped the other half and put it in the fridge. I know what he’ll be eating for dinner tomorrow.
I know what your thinking! Health conscience Jennifer is feeding her Husband that kind of sandwich. I figured he deserved a treat since he did eat salad the other night. But for me I made a Philly Cheese Steak Salad and boy was it good!! Dam good, I tell ya!
It has been soooooo long since I had a Philly Cheese Steak! I decided on a salad instead of a sandwich because I ate a piece of Strawberry Chiffon Cake with my lunch and I was trying to watch my carbs, plus I wasn’t super duper hungry. However I did manage to eat the whole salad. You don’t see it here, but I added more peppers, onions and jalapenos to the salad. It was mighty amazing! The cheese melted when I topped it with additional peppers and onions. Oh man!! I may have to steal his half of the sandwich and turn it into a salad for lunch tomorrow. By the way I will be making this again very soon!!
My salad my seem a little high in the fat category, way more than I care for, but I decided to use full fat cheese. When you have a good meal like this, sometimes you just have to splurge and have fat! The meat is a little high in fat to, but the calories were only 180 for four ounces, which I thought was pretty good. I used Trader Joe’s Thinly Sliced Sirloin. Everything else is low calorie. The salad in general was only 300 calories. Not bad for a Philly Cheese Steak Salad.
Now I know next month is Father’s Day and every once in a while our men need a good sandwich, so I am going to include the recipe to make the man sandwich. Just take in mind this in NOT healthy, repeat not healthy!! The calories are through the roof! You may fall over when you see it!! Remember my Husband only ate half. For him thats ok, since he does physical work all day and he works up an appetite when he gets home. Now you can see why he’s not the biggest salad fan.
- 1 lbs sirloin, thinly sliced
- ½ bell pepper, sliced thin
- ½ medium onion, sliced thin
- ½ tbsp. butter
- 1 Cup jack cheese, shredded (I used a jack mix)
- jalapenos & banana peppers (optional)
- 1 loaf Ciabatta bread
- In a skillet add your sirloin. During cooking, keep shredding your meat with a fork into bite size pieces. Cook until no longer pink and reaches 160 degrees. About 12 - 20 minutes.
- Meanwhile in another skillet add butter, peppers and onions. Cook until tender about 10 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 350
- Slice ciabatta in half length wide, add cooked sirloin, peppers, onions and cheese.
- Place sandwich in oven and bake until cheese is melted, about 5 minutes.
Now take in mind my Husband does NOT eat like this all the time. I wanted him to fall over when he saw his sandwich. He always complains that I cook to healthy. besides it was kind of fun to cook this way!
- 1 lbs sirloin, thinly sliced
- 8 cups romaine lettuce - chopped
- 1 cup tomatoes - chopped
- 1 bell pepper, sliced thin
- 1 medium onion, sliced thin
- ½ tbsp. butter
- 2 oz pepper jack cheese, shredded (I used a jack mix)
- 8 Tbsp balsamic dressing, fat free
- jalapenos & banana peppers (optional)
- In a skillet add your sirloin. During cooking, keep shredding your meat with a fork into bite size pieces. Cook until no longer pink and reaches 160 degrees. About 12 - 20 minutes.
- Meanwhile in a separate skillet add butter, peppers and onions. Cook until tender about 10 minutes.
- To assemble salad:
- Evenly divide lettuce, tomatoes and sirloin between four plates. Add ½ oz of cheese to each plate than top with peppers and onions. The cheese will melt between the meat and the peppers and onions. Top each salad with 2 Tablespoons of balsamic dressing.
I hope you enjoyed my episode of man versus woman Cheese Steak Style. I wonder what will be next? Stay tuned…
Have a wonderful day!
Jennifer

I often make his & hers versions of things for my husband and I, too – mine are typically meatless though!

I do his and her meals like this too. I just can’t eat like my husband does! Love the idea of a cheese steak salad!

I wish I could eat like my Husband. He is so skinny, it’s crazy! I try to fatten him up and the only one that gains weight is me!!!

This looks really good, and colorful.
The colors in the dish makes it look irresitible!

That was so cool of you to surprise your husband like that. I’m impressed that he stopped at a half a sandwich though. My Hubby would have pushed through the pain, finished it, then complained about a stomach ache for hours. 🙂
Both sandwich and salad look amazing.
Jennifer @ Peanut Butter and Peppers says
I’m kind of surprised he didn’t try to eat it all but I think he said he ate like 3 slices of pizza for lunch that day. Amazingly enough the sandwich tasted just as good the next day! The bread didn’t get soggy at all.

Ah-mazing. I could eat that salad everyday!
Jennifer @ Peanut Butter and Peppers says
It’s a good a salad and I didn’t even miss the bread, which is crazy coming from me!

Will you please, please send a link to this post to my beautiful wife, Mrs. G? I would love to have a sammich like that waiting for me when I got home. And I know she would love the salad. Great meal, thanks for sharing.
Jennifer @ Peanut Butter and Peppers says
lol, Don’t think my Husband comes home to this sandwich everyday! 🙂

Whenever I see a recipe for a Philly, I have to check it out. Yours looks and sounds great. Not bad for a West coast version. As a neanderthal, I LOVE meat and potatoes so salads typically dont make it to my plate. BUT, this one is indeed a nice compromise.

lol, you made me laugh! I have to agree on the West Coast they don’t know what a Philly Cheese steak is! Every time I go to Philadelphia, this is the first thing I get to eat! I love these sandwiches or salads! Nothing like melted cheese over meat! Yum!!
Our Eating Habits says
I want some of the man sandwich, it look sbetter than at a restaurant!
Betsy says
they both look absolutely scrumptious!

I would love to be able to put that on my table. But, alas, grandkids would want it in a tortilla minus the onions, DH would want it in a tortilla and the peppers left out, I would make it a salad and DD, well, she might, then again, might not want any of it. Whats a poor wife/mom/grandmom to do? Hee hee, guess whats for dinner tomorrow night.
Jennifer @ Peanut Butter and Peppers says
lol! My theory is, if you can’t please everybody, make it the way you want it at least you’ll please yourself! Don’t worry, they’ll eat it or at least pick out the onions and peppers. he he!!
