Jalapeño Cilantro Hummus

April 6, 2012 By Jennifer @ PB and P Design 32 Comments

Hi Everyone,

Happy Good Friday to you!!  Today I have off from work!  Woohoo!  Hmmm what to do with my day? I do know I’ll be munching on today’s recipe.

Trader Joe’s has a wonderful Jalapeno Cilantro Hummus that I just love, but they changed the calories on it from 45 calories for two tablespoons to 80, and that is way to much for me, since two tablespoons is not very much!  So I took their ingredients and made one of my own, which I think turned out perfect!  Mine is 28 calories for two tablespoons and has all the flavor of Trader Joe’s, but way fewer calories.

I didn’t add Tahini paste or olive oil and it’s creamy, smooth and spicy, all the components in which I think makes a good hummus.  The key to making your humus smooth, is peeling the garbanzo beans.  All you do is grab the bean and pinch it like you were shooting marbles; than the skin comes right off.  I gotten so good at peeling them, that it takes me no time to do one can, but I will admit it’s a pain in the butt to do, but well worth it in the end.  It’s as creamy as whipped mashed potatoes.

I took this hummus to work and got rave reviews.  Matter in fact one of my co-workers wanted the recipe so he could make it for his wife, how sweet is that?  This hummus is really easy to make and not many ingredients.  It’s made with garbanzo beans, jalapeno, cilantro, garlic and cumin.  I processed it in my mini food processor, no big ones needed.

Jalapeño Cilantro Hummus

Prep time
5 mins
Total time
5 mins

Serves: 2 Cups
Ingredients
  • 1 15.5oz can of low sodium Garbanzo Beans (reserve the juice from the can)
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • 1 handful of fresh cilantro
  • 1 jalapeño, seeded (be careful not to touch it and wash your hands after)
  • Juice of ½ a lemon or 2 tbsp of juice
  • 1 tsp. ground cumin
  • ½ tsp. salt
Instructions
  1. In a food processor add garlic and jalapeno and process until diced up. Add remaining ingredients and blend until all mixed well and a smooth consistency. Add 1 tablespoon of reserved juice at a time if it's hard to mix. I used about ¼ cup of juice.
  2. You may need to add salt & pepper to your tasting.
  3. Refrigerate for at least an hour before serving.

Well my friends, I worked a pinch late today, so my schedule is messed up, and Hubby is in the garage working, so it’s time for me to squeeze in 20 minutes of kickboxing before he comes out to watch TV.

Have a wonderful day and a super great “Good Friday”!!

That hummus was always my favorite at Trader Joe’s! Bummer about the calories. I’ve made a copycat recipe before also and it was definitely as good as the original. I’ll have to try your version!

I adore hummus and I am going to save this recipe for our very first jalapeno from the garden. We don’t have TJs so I have never heard of this combination but it sounds genius!

I’ve tried TJ’s jalapeno cilantro hummus and I loved it! But you’re right, 80 calories for 2 tablespoons is ridiculous. I’m so glad you recreated a homemade version with less calories! 🙂

Wow! I always buy that hummus at TJ’s. Its our favorite, but I haven’t checked the nutrition info in awhile so I’m so bummed! I’ll definitely be trying your recipe soon. My 6 year old loves hummus as much as I do, so I’m sure he’ll love helping me make it too!

I love hummus too and also make my own. It is so easy and tastes so much better than anything you can buy in the store…and healthier too! Plus jalapeno and cilantro, what a fantastic pairing. Following from Allergy Free Wednesdays! Thanks for sharing such a great recipe! Jana http://www.adoctorandanurse.com

I love this flavor combo! I make humus fairly frequently and never tried shelling the chick peas. It does sound like a pain but if it comes out creamy without the extra oil or tahini it’s worth a try. Thanks!

It is a pain to peel them, but it comes out like a creamy mashed potatoes, I love that more than when it’s gritty.

I just made this with my Magic Bullet (which I am still learning to use). I went a little heavy on the juice from the chickpeas to get it to the consistency I prefer. I will never buy the TJ version again! Sorry TJ but this is SO yummy!!!

Oh I’m so glad you like it! I love it too and it was a big hit at my work party! I used to buy TJ’s too, and not anymore even though there’s is pretty good, but I eat to much for there 80 calories for 2 tablespoons.

I’m so glad you liked it!! You inspired me, I”m going to make some right now, but I don’t have fresh cilantro, so I’m going to use dried to!! Thank you!!

Happy Tuesday! One thing you guys know about me is Happy Tuesday! One thing you guys know about me is that I love Target. It’s my happy place. I get so excited each season to see all the new things that come out.
🌿
One thing I always love is there faux vase/pot flowers and plants. They are always so pretty and I want to buy them all. But there a couple of things that stops me. The biggest one is that I have no storage for them. Two, they seemed to have gone up in price. They seemed a little pricy to me.
🌿
For my arrangement, I used one of my canisters for the bathroom. I used floral foam to stick the stems in and I used the paper towel as a filler because I only had very little bit of moss. If I had more moss and I would probably not use the paper towel. This arrangement cost me $5.99.
🌿
Tip: If you look at Targets faux foliage stems only, they have a lot that are same of what use in there vases. The one I used was Hearth and Hand and was only $5.99 for a stem. The exact ones they used in there pots.
🌿
Hope you enjoy this as much as I have making it.
Enjoy your day!

I took a can of Trader Joe’s cinnamon rolls and unraveled them, if that makes sense, and rolled them up like a palmier cookie. So fun! You could add food coloring to the frosting to make it pink and add sprinkles. Super cute! You can follow step by step recipe on Heidi’s Instagram page!
